Medicare Open Enrollment: How Your Pharmacist Can Help

Open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7. Your pharmacist can help compare Part D plans against your medication list — usually for free.

Medicare Open Enrollment can feel like homework you didn't sign up for. Every fall, from October 15 through December 7, you have the chance to review and change your Medicare coverage — including your Part D prescription drug plan. And every year, I watch people get overwhelmed by the options, the jargon, and the sheer number of plans available here in California.

Here's something a lot of people don't realize: your pharmacist can actually help with this. We look at medication lists all day, every day. We know which plans cover what, and we can often spot a better deal in about ten minutes.

Why Open Enrollment Actually Matters

You might be thinking, "My plan was fine last year — why should I change anything?" Fair question. But here's the thing: plans change their formularies (the list of covered drugs) every year. A medication that cost you $10 last year might jump to $60 in January if your plan moved it to a higher tier or dropped it altogether.

I've seen this happen more times than I can count. Someone comes in for a refill in January, and suddenly their copay has tripled. By then, Open Enrollment is over, and they're stuck with that plan until the next fall.

What Your Pharmacist Can Do During Open Enrollment

When you bring your medication list to the pharmacy, here's what we can help with:

Compare your current costs to other plans. We can run your medications through different Part D plans available in Los Angeles and show you the actual annual cost — not just the monthly premium. Sometimes a plan with a higher premium actually saves you money because it covers your specific drugs better.

Check formulary details. Not all coverage is created equal. Some plans require prior authorization for certain medications, or they'll only cover the generic version. We can flag those requirements before you enroll.

Look at your pharmacy network. Most plans have preferred pharmacies where your copays are lower. If you've been coming to Vine Discount Pharmacy for years (and plenty of folks in Hollywood have — we've been at the corner of Vine and Fountain since 2003), we can make sure any new plan you're considering includes us in-network.

Explain the donut hole. That coverage gap still confuses people, even though it's smaller than it used to be. We can walk you through what it means for your specific medications.

What to Bring When You Come In

Make it easier on both of us — bring a current list of all your medications, including dosages and how often you take them. If you have your insurance card and your most recent Part D plan documents, even better. We can usually review everything in the time it takes to fill a prescription.

And yes, this service is free. We're a Good Neighbor Pharmacy, and helping you navigate insurance is just part of what neighborhood pharmacists do.

The California Advantage

If you qualify for both Medicare and Medi-Cal (what's called "dual eligible"), you have some extra protections and might be eligible for additional assistance programs. California also has a State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) with counselors who can provide one-on-one help. We can point you in that direction if your situation is complex.

Don't Wait Until December 6

I get it — Open Enrollment is seven weeks long, so it's easy to think you have plenty of time. But the closer we get to the December 7 deadline, the busier everything gets. Insurance companies get backlogged, and if there's an issue with your application, there's less time to fix it.

Mid-October through November is actually the sweet spot. Plans for the next year are finalized, we're not swamped yet, and you have time to make a thoughtful decision.

A Quick Reality Check

Comparing Medicare plans isn't anyone's idea of fun. But spending thirty minutes now can save you hundreds — sometimes thousands — of dollars next year. I've seen people cut their drug costs in half just by switching to a plan that better matches what they actually take.

If you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, that's exactly when to ask for help. Stop by the pharmacy during the week (we're open Monday through Friday, 9 to 6), or give us a call at (323) 957-9446. Bring your medication list, and we'll figure it out together.
